Application Programs 4 -5

Overview

The purpose for teaching Application Programs in forth and fifth grades is to develop the students' proficiency in a word processing application, a spreadsheet application, a presentation application, and a database application.

Students are also taught how to use an internet browser and safe internet skills. All of these are taught with the understanding that no matter what applications may be developed in the future, they will have the skills for life in order to conquer them all.

Student outcomes (Grade 4):
* Identify and use basic features and basic elements of a word processing application. Identify and use basic formatting and editing features (ie: centering, font changes, spelling, line spacing, headers and footers). Insert images (clip art, graphics, and tables) into a document.
* Identify and use basic features (ie: create slides, use animation, clip art, import pictures, and transitions) of a presentation application. Identify and use basic features to create a presentation on a specific topic.
* Demonstrate safe and ethical use of the internet. Identify and use navigation features of browser (ie: go, back, forward). bookmark a web sit for future use. Use search engines effectively to find relevant information on a subject.

Student outcomes (Grade 5):
* Identify and use basic features and basic elements of a word processing application. Identify and use basic formatting and editing features (ie: centering, font changes, spelling, line spacing, headers and footers). Insert images (clip art, graphics, and tables) into a document.
* Describe structure and function of a spreadsheet (ie: cell, rows, columns, formulas) and apply formatting features. Create an original spreadsheet, enter simple formulas and produce charts and graphs from that spreadsheet.

Teaching & Learning Strategies (Grades 4 - 5)

* Identify title bar, each tab (home, insert, page layout, etc.). Use most, if not all, of the functions that each has to offer by manipulating a document that the student has created.
* Explain the structure and function of a spreadsheet. Fifth grade students will create a spreadsheet using students' subjects and fictitious grades; have them calculate what their average would be for each subject. Then take the whole classes input and make a separate spreadsheet to chart and graph the class as a whole.
* The fourth and fifth grade students will create presentations on variouse topics to be presented to their class.
* Explain to students that they should not provide any information about themselves to anyone over the Internet. Once online, show the students how to access effective search engines to obtain information on a project. Explain the use of book marking a web site for the ability to go back to it easily. Explain how to document where there information was obtained.

Assessment (Grades 4 - 5)
* Student should demonstrate basic competencies in using applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and browser software. They will be familiar enough with the purpose and function of these technologies to enable them to select the appropriate tool for a task. They will be expected to identify various components of a computer system, and practice good file management skills."
